Leo X planned a Western Crusade against the infidel Turk. Cardinal Wolsey took the plans and modified them to suit the needs of the powers of Europe. Whilst in this process, Wolsey put together a settlement of universal peace, which put England at the centre of diplomatic affairs.
The peace settlement bound France, the Papacy, Spain, the Empire and England into action against the Turk. The treaty also:
· Guaranteed a non aggression approach between the major powers
· It was built in the principle of collective security so that any aggressor would be surrounded by the other states
Twenty representatives of European powers were sent to London in October 1518 to sign the treat and this meant that Henry and Wolsey had achieved diplomatic success.
The Treaty of London was a significant period of Henry’s reign as the treaty ended the threat of England being an isolated power in Europe. It proved that Henry was a mature and diplomatic man who wanted his country to seek and organize peace. Henry had also found that Wolsey was a man that he could trust and allow to organise more diplomatic affairs.
